If those experiencing street homelessness have been on your mind in this extremely cold snap and you don't know how to help, we understand. That's why we've pulled together some information to let you know what's happening locally, and what you can do to help.
Firstly, you might not be aware that all local councils have a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), which is activated here in Peterborough when the overnight temperature is forecast to be zero degrees Celsius or below for three or more consecutive nights. In short, that means that council officers work with our partner organisations to make sure that anyone sleeping on the streets will be offered shelter.
This is of course a temporary arrangement and cold temperatures will continue to have a severe impact on those experiencing homelessness throughout the winter. If you're worried about someone sleeping rough, you can use Streetlink to connect them with support services.
We know that those sleeping rough often experience isolation, so even the simplest conversation can make a big difference. Offering a hot drink is a great way to offer some immediate warmth and show someone you care.

You can also help by donating coats, sleeping bags and other items to our partners, who support those experiencing homelessness every day. Find out what kind of items they're looking for on our contribution page.
It's never been easier to donate cash to help us make Peterborough a city where homelessness is rare, brief and unrepeated... if you're passing Bridge Street, tap your contactless card or phone on our donation station and rest assured that every penny will help our amazing partners to deliver life-changing homelessness support.
